The ship was built in Manitowoc, Wisconsin and was named after Christina Nilsson.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Service History )〕 It was built at a cost of $23,000.
On October 23, 1884, the ''Nilsson'' cleared Escanaba, Michigan en route to Chicago, Illinois carrying pig iron.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Final Voyage page 1 )〕 When a blizzard hit the area, the captain attempted to make port at Baileys Harbor. On October 23, while still trying to navigate through the storm, the ''Nilsson'' struck a reef and began to founder.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Final Voyage page 2 )〕 All crew members survived.
The ship's cargo was recovered, however, attempts to recover the ''Nilsson'' were unsuccessful.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Final Voyage page 3 )〕
